Footings are the hidden base that spreads the weight of your walls or posts into the soil. When they’re too small, cracked, or resting on poor soil, everything above them suffers—walls crack, beams settle, and floors sag. Rebuilding or adding footings is about giving structural members a stable, properly sized “shoe” to stand on.
Replacing a footing is a controlled operation to avoid sudden movement:
1. The area around the existing footing is excavated for access.
2. Temporary shoring or jacks are used to support the load above.
3. The failed footing is removed or heavily relieved of its duties.
4. A new, reinforced footing is formed and poured to the correct size and depth.
5. Once cured, the load is transferred from the temporary supports back onto the new footing.
This level of work is warranted when:
Posts are bearing directly on dirt or crumbling concrete pads.
Footings are clearly cracked and displaced.
There is repeated settlement in the same supporting area.
There was no proper footing installed during original construction.
