The way your yard is sloped determines where water naturally wants to go. If the ground tilts toward the house, water will always migrate toward the foundation, saturating soil and increasing pressure on walls. Over time, this causes leaks, frost-related damage, and even differential settlement. Regrading is about changing that default direction.
A good regrading strategy is more than just “pile dirt against the house”:
There’s a noticeable, consistent slope away from the foundation for several feet.
Soil placed near the house is compacted enough that it doesn’t immediately settle and recreate the low spot.
Low areas in the yard that tend to collect water are raised or given drainage routes.
Planting beds and hardscapes are designed so they don’t trap water against the foundation.
Regrading seldom stands alone. It usually supports:
Downspout extensions that carry roof water out onto the regraded surface.
French drains or swales that move runoff along the new slope.
Exterior waterproofing by reducing how much water ever reaches the wall.
